CCMR End of Year Report

Bret E Williamson | Published on 12/18/2021

CCMR End of Season Update - November 2021
CCMR Board: Emma Dunn volunteered and is now on the CCMR Board of Directors. We welcome her and the excellent support she has provided already.

DudBob Singletrack. We formally adopted the DudBob Trail. We are working with Friends of Fourmile on detailed DudBob and Triad Ridge maps showing obstacles and alt routes. We also supported a BLM photoshoot in June.

Texas Creek New Singletrack. BLM played the wildlife (bighorn sheep) card on this project. We haven’t completely given up on this project, but it isn’t looking good.

Rainbow Trail Reroute. The 2016 Hayden Pass fire and subsequent rain events demolished several miles of the RBT east of County Road 6. BLM, USFS, and CCMR have worked to reopen this RBT segment. The USFS and BLM NEPAs are now complete. The OHV Grant CCMR submitted in 2020 has been approved and we should receive funding in 2022. We are presently working with trail builders and will let a subcontract in 2022. We will need CCMR volunteers to help clear the corridor as we did on the DudBob trail. We will start the clearing on 16 April 22, so please mark your calendars.

PSI Record of Decision. The Pike San Isabel National Forest (PSINF) Record of Decision Final Environmental Impact Statement was released in October 2020. This was the result of a lawsuit filed by various environmental groups in 2012 claiming the USFS had not done the necessary Environment Assessments on hundreds of roads and trails within the PSI ranger districts. Still no resolution.

CCMR Adopted Trails. FYI, CCMR has adopted and helps maintain and clear the following trails. 1. Monarch Ridge Trail. 2. Rainbow Trail from Silver Creek to Mears Junction.3. Rainbow Trail from Hayden Creek to Oak Creek. 4. Poplar Gulch.5. Sundgren Sunset Loop in the Big Bend OHV area. 6. Greens Creek Trail. 7. DudBob Trail. Additionally, we are working with the Colorado Trail Foundation and the USFS on the Colorado Trail section south of Marshall Pass to fix the mud bog at Headwater Hill (AKA Windy Point). We are working on a plan for next summer. Stay tuned.

Trail Work & Workdays. We had workdays at Sundgren Sunset Loop (April), Greens Creek on National Trail Day (June), Monarch Crest Snow Shovel Party (June), and the RBT Washout Workday (July).

Meetings Attended. CCMR Board members represented CCMR at the following meetings: Monthly Envision ERiB meetings, the TPA Colorado 600, several GMUG Travel Management Plan zoom meetings, COHVCO Annual Trails meeting in Denver (Oct), and the BLM/USFS/CCMR Year-End Meeting (Oct).

Local Support. Purchased a Salida Skate Park brick with our logo on it. We had a booth at the Salida Parks & Recreation Touch-A-Truck event (May) and their FIBArt 5/10K Run (June). Provided Vapor Trail MTB Support (August). Flagged the Summer Grand Traverse MTB and Foot Race (Sep). Flagged and swept the Banana Belt MTB event (Sep). We also had a booth at the three-day 14er Fest event in BV (Sep).

Letters Submitted. Moab Travel Management (April), BLM Chaffee County Dispersed Camping (May), BLM Hard Rock Expansion (August), GMUG Travel Management Plan comments (Nov).

We also submitted CCMR volunteer hours to USFS and BLM. We completed over 2,000 hours this year. Thanks for all of your support!

CCMR Grants. CCMR submitted and was awarded an Extreme Terrain $250 grant (July). We wrote and submitted a GOCO grant but did not get it (Aug). CCMR is currently writing two CPW OHV grants for funding in 2023. The first grant is for the Big Bend Motocross track maintenance and equipment. The second is for CCMR adopted trail maintenance. Trails like Poplar Gulch and others need work that exceeds our normal workdays. We intend to use the grant to subcontract to professional trail builders for this work.
